The bison is under protection in the Republic of Belarus from 1946 till present. It was included in all editions of the Red Book of Belarus.
The working-out of national “Program for Preservation, Resettlement and Use of bison in Belarus” (so-called Program “Bison”) played a major role in increasing of abundance of bison. Because of its implementation, 10 bison groups have been created in the Republic of Belarus.
The total of bison living in Belarus in the wild has exceeded 1500. Today Belarus ranks the first in terms of number of free-living bison.
